Tuyisenge Jean is a mother-of-three who lives in Burundi and experienced the horrors of a dozen years of civil war which forced her to flee bitter fighting.
When the war was over, Jean returned home to the scorched earth of Rutana Province where many homes had been razed and farming-based livelihoods obliterated. She ended up living in a house with a leaky grass roof: ‘It was dirty,’ recalls Jean. ‘In terms of hygiene, it was really bad.’
With the help of Toilet Twinning and through Cord's work in Burundi, that ‘home’ is now a distant memory.
Now the 26-year-old has a brick-built house and something she never had before – a toilet. And the smallest room in the house is a big deal for Tuyisenge: ‘I’m proud of having a house and a latrine for my family,’ she says. ‘Having access to water and education about hygiene means a new life for us.’
