2800 to 2000 B.C.

First toilets in the world located in the Indus River Valley in North-West India ( now Pakistan ). Built outside the wall of houses, toilets were made from bricks with wooden seats on top.

2500 B.C.

First water flushed toilets found inside houses in Lothal, near Ahmedabad in India.  Drains between houses were connected and covered with bricks.

2300 B.C.

Six sitting type toilets with drainage systems discharging into a sewer system in Mesopotamia.

2000 B.C.

Crete enjoyed a fresh water supply, an entire sewage system and wooden seated toilets.

200 B.C. to 200 A.D.

Rome had well developed bath-cum-toilets. Romans used constructed toilets when they travelled.

200 A.D.

Chinese women and men were using separate toilets in Beijing.

315 A.D.

The first public toilets established in Rome- all 144 of them.

The first use of toilet paper. Chinese Emperor Hong Wu ordered sheets measuring  2 feet by 3 feet for wiping.

Europeans used cesspools, pan closets and soil closets that required manual cleaning –they didn’t have plumbing or drainage.

England’s Sir John Harrington invented two flushing water toilets, one for his godmother, Queen Elizabeth, and one for himself.  "The Ajax Flushing Toilet" resembled the modern toilet bowl.

Pottery close stool water closet made in Britain: easier to clean, lighter in weight, not liable to corrosion and  cheaper than metal.

Paperless toilet, a combination of toilet, bidet and dryer, invented n Japan.

Duoset cistern with two buttons and two flush volumes as a water-saving measure introdused in the UK and also  patented in Australia.

2005

The world's most expensive toilet designed by Russians and purchased by NASA for the International Space Station .. It filtered urine into drinking water.

2008

Development of a compost toilet for public use. The rounded shape of the design ensures optimum size and easy cleaning. Surfaces and toilet bowl are made of self-cleaning ceramic, the toilet seats of  biological compressed wood, which can be disposed of after every use.
