Students at Durham University twinned toilets in their colleges to help flush away poverty in the developing world. Toilets in 10 of the colleges, including St Chad’s, St Hild and St Bede and Grey have been twinned with loos in Burundi, central Africa.

Lis Martin, from York, organised the twinnings while she was a student at the University. Lis said: ‘Having experienced life without a toilet whilst working in Uganda I felt compelled to raise awareness of this issue. Without basic toilets people lack dignity and safety. The Durham Student Union agreed that it’s out of order that 4000 children die of diarrhea every day. Talking toilets is taboo but toilet twinning is a novel, practical and long-lasting way of tackling poverty.’
